The Logic Behind the Tool

Here is the logic breakdown:

  1. IRS Uniform Lifetime Table: The tool uses the official IRS distribution factors to determine the required withdrawal. As a senior gets older, the “factor” decreases, meaning the percentage they must withdraw increases.
  2. Tax Bracket Modeling: It calculates the “Marginal Tax Bite.” It compares the tax on their base income (Social Security/Pension) vs. the tax on their total income after the RMD is added.
  3. The “Tax Bite” Metric: This is the actual dollar amount of the RMD that goes straight to the IRS rather than the senior’s pocket.
  4. Projection Logic: It shows a 10-year outlook, as RMDs typically grow in size every year, even if the account balance stays flat, due to the aging factors.
